Cedar Road Aboriginal Head Start Program - Prince Rupert

Cedar Road Aboriginal Head Start Program Society is a parent-run non-profit society that was incorporated in September, 1997. We provide preschool services for Aboriginal children ages three to five, in the Prince Rupert / Port Edward area.

The program is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors composed of parents, guardians and Elders. Families are a critical part of our program's continuance and success. The project trains PAC members to become familiar with school situations and comfortable helping out in the classroom. Parents often continue to be involved with their children's education in elementary school and on Parent Advisory Councils in the School District.

The Cedar Road facility is now in a beautiful residence, with 8 Staff members, including program coordinator, bookkeeper, family involvement worker, bus driver, ECE manager and 3 ECE workers. We also have 3 Elders teaching Haida and Tsimshian language, songs, story telling, dancing and art.

To make sure that all the children are represented and that everyone can feel pride in their traditional beliefs, we also bring in the Nisga'a, Gitsan, Métis and Cree cultures through stories, language CDs and resource people in the community.

Cedar Road AHS Program is determined to enhance the lives of children, their families, and the community by providing a caring, supportive, and vital community service.
