Little Mukluks Child Care Centre is hosted by Cariboo Friendship Society on Secwépemc territory, in Williams Lake.
Little Mukluks is committed to providing a culturally based program for Indigenous children and families. We believe in providing an environment that will enhance and support children’s natural growth and development– guided by quality, caring and supportive staff.
Our families come to us from a wide range of cultures, the main population of our families are Shuswap and Chilcotin. We also have Cree, Metis, Carrier, Sioux, and a few other cultures from near and far. Our families are very diverse and come together for a monthly PAC meeting.
At this time the two main languages practiced are Shuswap and Chilcotin, and we have language throughout the program in the form of signage. The educators also use some basic guidance language with the children.
We also have many cultural items throughout the Centre as well. We have traditional animals, puzzles, toys, books and materials for the children to use.
Our Elders provide guidance to our educators and staff, and Laura Lee does a weekly smudge with the children and staff. Willie comes in to visit the girls and children and will drum on occasion.
The parent advisory committee participates in brainstorming for fundraising and activities with the funds raised. They have secured bowling time for the children and want to see more extracurricular activities planned for the children.
