XaXe STELITKEL is hosted by the Victoria Native Friendship Centre in Lkwungen territory, in Victoria. SXaXe STELITKEL means ‘sacred children’ in the SENĆOŦEN language, recognizing that children are gifts from the Creator and these youngsters will be our future leaders.

Our program is committed to connecting Indigenous community with culture and language, and creating a space where children can feel proud to be Indigenous.

Families come from diverse cultural backgrounds, and so we have a range of language learning, with Kwak̓wala speaking staff and a Nuu-Chah-Nulth speaking Elder. We are partnering with our Elders and Language groups to bring in Cree, Dakota Sioux, Anishinaabemowin, and Dene.

Through music, songs, drumming and dance, we add cultural elements to our surroundings whenever possible– to every part of children and staff culture into our program. Our Elders come to us with different skills and gifts, and we honour those.  Some are fluent speakers, some are past child care workers, some connect with the earth.

We are starting to add dance to our program as our director has the honour of having those skills and being able to pass them down.

Children of our staff are welcome to join, which adds another level of family and different culture to our program. The Parent Group meet every second Tuesday at 4:45.
